Alton School pupils demonstrate their commitment and resilience in achieving excellent exam results

The long wait before the publishing of examination results is nerve wracking enough without the additional strains that were placed upon our students this year at such a crucial and developmental time of their lives. Yet, this challenge was met with the usual Alton response:  a coming together and a determination to meet any challenge.  Our A level and GCSE results were incredible – a record high in A levels, across all grade boundaries with all students accepted into their universities of choice and over 70% of our students accepted to study at Russell Group Universities.  Our GCSE students also proved their resilience, with 94% of pupils achieving grades 9 – 5 (equivalent to A* – B/C) and 59% of students awarded the highest grades 9-7 (equivalent to A*- A).

These are impressive grades and clearly demonstrate rigour, a determination to succeed, excellence in teaching and learning and a pastoral support system that has still cared and nurtured these students while schools have been closed.  But, for me it demonstrates so much more.  These grades are a testament to the way we do things at Alton, to our community of staff, parents and students who are fully committed to each other and who collaborate and care for one another regardless of any challenge.

As the new Headmaster of Alton School, l I am in the privileged position of being party to all that goes on behind the scenes, much of which has been intensified during these last months. The goalposts from government, examination boards and other regulatory bodies have been in a constant state of flux and as is well publicised, this has challenged all educational establishments in a way we have possibly not ever experienced before. Covid-19 has brought about a need for operational diligence that has tested every facet of school life. It has taught us how to teach in a new (remote) way and brought out skills that some of us did not even know we had. Despite starting as Head in the Easter Term, I have been at Alton long enough to praise the agility, willingness and professionalism of each and every member of the school’s community – for some this has been easier than it has for others, but students and staff alike have taken the positives and are looking forward to what September brings.

Whilst hand washing, face masks and social distancing may continue to be part of our lives for some time to come, the need for excellent and agile teaching will never change. At Alton our aim is to look after our school community to get through Covid, but to continue to focus on the very best teaching so we continue to enjoy excellent results in years to come.

GCSE Results

Alton School students celebrating incredible exam results.

Alton School GCSE students are excited and relieved in equal measure to receive their excellent results after what has been a difficult and uncertain 6 months.

With 94% of pupils achieving grades 9 – 5 (equivalent to A* – B/C) and 59% of students awarded the highest grades 9-7 (equivalent to A* – A), these results are a tribute to Alton School students who remained positive despite the challenging circumstances.

Grades were awarded in subjects across the curriculum, with particularly strong results in Maths, English, Music, Biology, Art and Languages. Amongst the success stories are those of 3 students who achieved straight 9 grades.

In English and Mathematics, students produced outstanding results well above the national average. In English language and Mathematics, we were delighted with a 100% pass rate (grades 4 and above) with over half achieving grades 9-7.

At Alton School results matter but it is the progress that each individual makes that is of the greatest value. Progress is developed and monitored as pupils move through the School all the way from Nursery, through Prep and Senior school and often into Sixth Form. The effect of this is seen in the excellent Value Added scores our students obtain – this is the measure of progress that students achieve based on where a student started from and the progress they make relative to other similar students.

Alton School’s Headmaster, Karl Guest, emphasizes that it is not only the academic achievement that should be celebrated but also the resilience students have demonstrated in recent months, overcoming great uncertainty and showing their determination to capture the excellent progress that they have made during their time at Alton School.

I am delighted with the fantastic GCSE results our students have achieved and extremely proud of all our students and staff for rising to the challenge of remote learning and online assessments. You have shown that what makes Alton School so special is not limited to the confines of our buildings but lives beyond. Success like this can only be achieved when the whole school community comes together; the staff, pupils and parents' resilience has been overwhelming. Thank you to you all and well done!

Before Easter, Alton School put in place a structured timetable of remote, interactive lessons using Microsoft Teams. The combination of keeping to the usual school day and ensuring lots of live learning with teachers has kept the day structured for pupils. As well as continuing to work hard on their GCSE courses, all students took part in a comprehensive programme including pre-A level courses to help with selection of A levels, Business Challenges to promote team-work and entrepreneurial skills and weekly pastoral sessions.
