Things are happening at Alton School

We are delighted to share with you some significant changes occurring at the school. Our focus is continuing to develop a holistic education, developing academic rigor as well as interpersonal skills in all the pupils. Character plays an important element of all our lives and our co-curricular activities help to develop skills such as resilience, leadership, team building as well as creativity and initiative.

Our day is extending and our co-curricular is expanding

  • 8.35am until 3.50pm lessons
  • 3.50-4.50 Co-curricular activities/ Supervised Prep
  • 5pm – buses leave and a free shuttle to the station (4pm on a Friday)
  • 5pm- 6pm – Supervised Prep continues

From September 2024 our buses will leave at 5pm to facilitate an hour of co-curricular provision after lessons have finished. We will have a wide variety of co-curricular clubs every day after curriculum lessons finish at 3.50pm.

We are always open until 6pm each evening, offering pupils an opportunity to get their homework completed with supervision from teaching staff.

Our new school day provides flexibility to families wishing to collect children at 4pm, 5pm or 6pm to fit around work and other commitments.

Minibus timetable and our new railway station shuttle bus

The minibuses will run at 5pm rather than at the end of the School Day. Benefits of the minibuses running later:

  • – As many pupils as possible can stay for co-curricular activities without being impacted by not being able to get home.
  • – Pupils can stay and attend Prep if they are not involved in co-curricular activities. Allowing all homework to be done with supervision from a teacher at school, making parents’ lives easier.
  • – Pupils in examination years can attend all study support sessions available after school without impacting parent collections.

Time with family is important so minibuses will leave at the end of the school day on a Friday.

We have added many stops to our minibus timetable and are flexible to specific requests from parents. We are also now running a free shuttle bus from Alton Train station at 8.15am and back to the station at 5pm (for the 5.15 train).

Facilities/Infrastructure

What has happened already?

Classroom upgrades: In September 2023 we began a two-year investment in the modernisation and improvement of the school estate. All of our classrooms are being redecorated, lighting and windows improved and the upgrading of our outdoor spaces.

New Sporting Facilities: Our new astroturf Multi Games Area was completed in November 2023 and improvements to our woodland footpath.

What infrastructure is next?

New car park, playground and School Office: Summer 2024 sees the development of new car parks and a brand-new playground which will support outdoor play and learning as well as a new School Office area to welcome parents and visitors to the school.
