Co-Curricular Activities

Explore the World of Co-Curricular Clubs at Alton School

At Alton School, we believe education extends far beyond the classroom. We understand the importance of nurturing each pupil’s natural passions and encouraging them to become well-rounded individuals. That’s why we offer a wide range of exciting co-curricular clubs that cater to diverse interests and talents.

We are committed to offering a dynamic and ever-evolving range of co-curricular clubs. We encourage every pupil to explore these opportunities, as our club offerings are constantly changing to cater to evolving interests. So, whether your child is passionate about music, sports, arts, or philosophy, there’s always something new to explore at Alton School. It’s not just an education; it’s an adventure in self-discovery and growth.

Our co-curricular clubs and societies are held at different times of the school day, before school, at lunch and after school too. As an inclusive school we also encourage student leadership of clubs and societies, developing those interpersonal skills of teamwork, creativity and leadership.

An extensive variety of clubs and societies

Our lunch, break and after school offer includes Dissection Club, Hypatia support, choirs, music theory, thought-provoking MedSoc or debating club and more. For sports enthusiasts, we offer a plethora of opportunities, from hockey, football, netball, and cricket nets to rugby 7s, athletics, golf, trampolining, yoga, and more.

We are committed to supporting our pupils in their academic journeys, especially during examination years. Therefore, we provide subject-specific support sessions, including Maths, Languages, Art drop-ins, and Science support. But we don’t stop at pupils; we have something special for parents too. Our Community Choir offers parents and staff the chance to discover and share their passions, making Alton School a place where everyone can explore their interests and talents.

Creative Arts

Our vibrant Creative Arts department engages in competitions and provides opportunities for all pupils to learn a new instrument or develop their public speaking and acting skills.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the World’s leading achievement award. It offers a great opportunity for personal development and provides millions of young people with the opportunity to be the best that they can be. It steers young people along the path to a more productive and prosperous future and for many it is a life-changing experience.

There are three levels of the programme leading to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. The awards take progressively longer to complete and become more challenging as participants expand their skills.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is open to students in Years 9 and above.  The emphasis is on community volunteering, physical and skills activities, which allow students to develop their own interests and talents as well as learning new skills.

The highlight of many participants’ Duke of Edinburgh experience is the expedition, a chance to work as a team planning routes, equipment and menus, followed by a practice expedition and a qualifying expedition completed as a team.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Described by one parent as ‘the most significant character education opportunity Alton School offers’, the CCF gives pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their skills.

The CCF is an educational partnership between the School and the Ministry of Defence, which offers young people a broad range of challenging, adventurous and educational activities which enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline.

At Alton School we offer CCF to pupils in Year 8 and above, with the older, more experienced cadets taking responsibility for delivering some of the lessons to the younger cadets.  Training is split between parade evenings (in school), field days, weekend camps and courses and Summer Camp.  Parade night provides the basic training across several areas, which is then enhanced during the field days and weekend camps, allowing them to complete weapon handling training and to spend longer periods of time on developing a particular skill or work towards a qualification.
