Learning Support

The Learning Support Department is dedicated to supporting our pupils’ academic development and to coordinating the delivery of additional academic provision, in order to improve learning outcomes.

The department encourages pupils to make the most of their personal strengths. Our aim is to help build each individual’s confidence, self-esteem and ability to fulfil their potential.

Often pupils’ needs have already been identified by assessment reports from relevant professionals before they come to us. Alternatively, they may become apparent through teacher observations and class assessments. It all helps us to determine their level of need; for example, some pupils may need long-term support, while others may need just a short-term boost in certain skills to increase their confidence or ability.

The Learning Support team will advise staff of ways they can support the pupil in class. If appropriate, small group intervention, pupil mentoring and/or individually tailored programmes of learning are put into place.

Some children with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) require specialist help in order to meet their potential. The Head of Learning Support is a specialist assessor, qualified to teach individuals with SpLDs, and works closely alongside teaching staff and the pastoral team, in order to support, mentor and advise pupils with difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.

If it is felt that assessments or recommendations from other professionals, such as occupational therapists, would be beneficial in order to create a fuller picture of a pupil’s needs, we would advise parents on where to find appropriate help.

Members of the teaching staff are able to refer pupils to the Head of Learning Support at any time. Parents are also able to approach the Head of Learning Support if they have concerns about their child’s progress.
