Welcome to Our Lower School

Whether you are looking for a Reception place or somewhere where your child can continue their Primary School or Prep School education, we warmly welcome you.

The Lower School is a special place where kindness and mutual respect are the key values. We value every child in our care. Whatever a child’s ability, we give her or him the learning environment, the opportunities and the encouragement she or he needs to develop their personal potential.

Here in Lower School we aim high, we have high expectations and we get excellent results. Because we are a small school with small classes we have time to really focus on the bread and butter learning, the maths and English skills without which children cannot access the rest of the curriculum. We have time to enrich the children’s learning with sport, music and languages. Our small classes enable us to know everything about our children, we know how they learn and we know how to help them learn better! We are able to focus on each child and to ensure that they make progress. We identify and nurture children’s individual strengths as learners and as people.

We produce good people. Our children are self-confident, happy, kind and encouraged to be the best they can be. We teach virtues such as kindness, compassion, courage, justice, honesty, self-discipline and gratitude.

We are a caring community, we offer a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that enables all learners to develop their character and helps them to succeed. Although we were graded ‘Excellent’ in all areas in the 2017 ISI inspection we are continually striving to further develop and enhance our curriculum and our resources. Assessment gives us a clear snapshot of where the Lower School is now, in relation to the National Average. In a school generally most pupils will be making expected progress, some pupils will be making more than expected progress and others will be working towards expected progress. Here at Alton the majority of pupils are performing at a level well above their actual age, analysis of the results shows the huge amount of value that is added by the teaching in the Lower School.
