Life in Year 6 - A New Approach

A Seamless Transition to Senior School: The Year 6 Programme

Year 6 at Alton School marks a significant step in our pupils’ educational journey. In this transitional year, we adopt a senior-style approach to learning, creating a bridge between the primary and senior phases of their education. While pupils continue to have a class tutor, the majority of their subjects are taught by specialist teachers from our Senior School. Whether it’s mathematics, English, humanities, science, sport, or creative arts, our pupils benefit from the expertise of educators who are passionate about their respective fields.

This approach not only provides valuable exposure to the more formal style of senior-based lessons but also eases the transition into Year 7, making it a smooth and stress-free process.

Introducing the Hypatia Programme

In Year 6 at Alton, we take differentiation to the next level with the Hypatia Programme. This self-directed initiative empowers pupils to explore their interests, develop research and critical thinking skills, and enhance their presentation abilities. Whether they’re creating cookbooks, sculpting, mastering new skills like magic, composing and performing original pieces, or designing board games, the Hypatia Programme encourages personal growth, creativity, and critical research skills.

Access to Senior School Facilities

In addition to learning from subject specialists, Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to utilise the facilities available in our Senior School. This includes access to science labs, sports amenities, and other resources that enhance their learning experience.

Familiarity Breeds Confidence

Perhaps one of the most significant advantages of this programme is the sense of familiarity it fosters. By spending their Year 6 in close proximity to the Senior School, pupils become acquainted with the layout, routines, and friendly faces they will encounter when they transition to the Senior School in September.

Reducing Anxiety, Boosting Confidence

The transition from primary to secondary school can be a daunting prospect for young learners. However, our Year 6 programme at Alton School is designed to alleviate these anxieties. When the time comes to move to Senior School, our pupils already feel at home and are ready to embrace the new challenges ahead with confidence.

A Bright Future Awaits

We understand the importance of a strong foundation in education. Our Year 6 special programme ensures that pupils not only receive the best possible education but also feel secure and prepared for the next phase of their academic journey.
