Enrichment and Experience
Aside from the day to day events and trips we do, we offer two key trips to our Sixth Formers, both of which our students regularly tell us are life changing and are firmly entrenched in what we see as our role in creating morally sound and outward looking young people. Every other year we visit our sister school in Varanasai and support the work of the Meera Foundation. We also go on pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Pilgrimage to Lourdes
A central focus of the Lower Sixth Form experience is the Easter Pilgrimage to Lourdes, undertaken with Salesian College. The students support HCPT and the disabled children who travel to Lourdes as part of family groups, providing care and fun for the disabled children and enriching the week for them. It is a two way experience and students return feeling that the week has helped them gain an understanding of serving others.
Expedition to India
“India is: the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition.” Mark Twain
A major event in Sixth Form life is the bi-annual expedition to India. The students visit one of our sister schools, St Joseph’s Convent in Varanasi, in the north of India, founded by two of our past students. Members of staff and students work with the Sisters in classes and accompany them on their outreach work in the surrounding villages.
From Varanasi the students travel across northern India, experiencing an enticing combination of majestic forts, grand palaces, chaotic cities, spiritual temples, holy rivers, awe-inspiring mountains, plodding camels and huge elephants. They are delighted, shocked and sometimes a little overpowered. At every turn, there are new sights, sounds, smells – and holy cows!
Students begin their Sixth Form life with the opportunity to attend a Personal Development Course in Wales involving raft building, absailing and hiking. Later in the year there is a two day Tall Ships Adventure in the Solent. Other optional trips include cultural visits to London, Paris, New York and Amsterdam. Students may also attend relevant subject based field trips throughout the Sixth Form as well as theatre and ballet trips with staff and/or other schools.
