Physical Education and Games

“The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit.” – Ken Doherty

Exercise is a core element of a balanced education and contributes towards the integrated development of mind and body and just as importantly it is fun! Our sports programme allows everyone to:

– Build self-confidence and self-esteem
– Enhance physical, social and cognitive abilities
– Encourage qualities such as resilience, perseverance, initiative and independence
– Strengthen knowledge of the relationship between care of the body, well-being and an active and healthy lifestyle.
– Instill a lifelong love for sport, health and exercise
– Inspire children to fulfil their potential in moving through the relevant sports pathways

Our children benefit from extensive grounds, including playing fields, tennis and netball courts, an adventure playground, woodlands and indoor sports facilities, with access to 2 large astro-turfs.

Our varied sports curriculum provides opportunities for everyone to achieve, regardless of their skill level.

The skills required for team games are acquired while the children are in Reception to Year 2. They move on to traditional team sports, including football, cricket, netball, hockey and rounders. We recognise that not all children excel at team games: our provision extends to include gymnastics, cross-country running, yoga, tennis and athletics. Swimming is taught in all classes from Reception through to Year 6.

Fixtures in team sports, both league and tournament, provide regular opportunities for competition and all pupils are involved in the year group.

Every year some of our pupils represent our school in regional and national athletics and cross-country competitions. For the very keen sportsperson, our after-school clubs provide more opportunities to have fun and hone skills.

An end-of-year highlight for children, parents and staff is the annual summer sports day. This is a fun occasion in an outstanding location, with plenty of friendly rivalry between the school houses.
