Careers Programme

Careers at Alton School: Preparing for the Future

At Alton School, we take immense pride in our comprehensive careers programme that guides pupils toward their future. This programme initiates in Year 7 and progressively evolves, reaching its pinnacle in the Sixth Form. Our goal is to help pupils:

Identify Strengths and Interests: We believe that understanding oneself is the first step towards a successful career. Our programme supports pupils in recognising their strengths and interests.

Investigate Future Career Paths: We provide resources and guidance to explore various career options, ensuring that pupils make informed decisions about their future.

Build Employability Skills: In a rapidly changing work environment, adaptability is crucial. Our programme equips pupils with employability skills to become adaptable lifelong learners, ready to meet the evolving needs of the workplace.

A Journey of Exploration and Discovery

Our Senior School offers a variety of activities and events aimed at broadening pupils’ perspectives on the diversity of careers and pathways. These include:

National Careers Week: A dedicated week to raise awareness of career opportunities.

Biennial Careers Fair: An event that showcases an array of career choices.

Inspirational Guest Speakers: Enrichment sessions featuring professionals who inspire and motivate our pupils.

Empowering Through Education

Pupils also explore employability skills in our Personal, Social, Health, Moral, and Economic Education (PSHMEE) curriculum. Our competencies tool on Unifrog, our dedicated careers platform, enables pupils to assess their skills’ development and track progress.

Yearly Roadmap

We follow a structured roadmap for each year group:

Year 7 & 8: Careers lessons integrated into the PSHMEE curriculum, alongside employer workshops.

Year 9: Pupils and parents are encouraged to participate in the ‘Take Your Child to Work’ programme, which includes workshops and visits from prominent organisations.

Year 10: Pupils receive individual psychometric profiling from Morrisby, a specialist career planning programme. This assessment provides valuable insights into aptitude, skills, and personality traits, suggesting suitable career paths and further research opportunities.

Year 11: An annual Enterprise Day provides hands-on learning about business. Pupils work on tasks, mentored and evaluated by local entrepreneurs.

Transitioning to the Sixth Form

For Years 11 and 12, pupils are encouraged to seek work experience independently, fostering essential employability skills. Our school is ready to help if required.

Sixth Form Support

In the Sixth Form, pupils receive dedicated support from their Tutors and Head of Sixth Form regarding potential career options. We work in conjunction with UCAS and Careers Coordinators to guide pupils through their Post-18 options. One-to-one interview practice with an external Interview Coach is provided, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future.

For specific careers services catering to Years 12 and 13, please visit the Sixth Form UCAS and Careers page. We are committed to empowering our pupils and helping them make informed choices about their careers.
