Alton@Home

Our Alton@Home programme (remote learning), has now been in effect since the very first day of lockdown in March 2020. It was a great success during the lockdown periods when our Lower, Senior and Sixth Form pupils were all physically at home. The Alton@Home programme is still in place for those pupils who are isolating and are well enough to join in with lessons.

As a school we are extremely confident that mentally our pupils are still in their classrooms even when they are at home. During the extended lockdown periods, we understood how important it was for our students to feel close to their teachers and friends through a challenging time.

All our pupils have access to a full and interactive timetable using Microsoft Teams. During the Summer Term of 2020 home learning was very successful. As a school we learnt a lot about what works well both academically and pastorally. We implemented those learnings into our remote programme to enhance the pupils’ experience. We are grateful to our teachers and support staff for making sure we were and still are ready to hit the ground running whenever remote learning is needed. All of these efforts have ensured pupils at Alton School continue to receive the very best teaching and pastoral support.

Below you will find a video with some of our current pupils sharing their thoughts on our remote learning put in place for the first lockdown:

Remote Learning - why it matters

The need to prepare our young people for a rapidly changing, increasingly complex and technology-driven world has never been more real than it is today. Much has changed in a very short space of time, consequently challenging schools to adapt.

Individual wellbeing is a key component of Alton@Home. We have a strong pastoral team and pupils had the opportunity for one-to-one meetings to ensure they feel supported at all times. We know that learning remotely could be challenging and it was vital to keep all lines of communication open and maintain our excellent record in pastoral care.

The success of Alton@Home is down to the partnership between home and School. Our teaching staff worked tirelessly to deliver home learning. Whilst pupils and parents continually supported us every step of the way, for which we are truly thankful.

Examination years

Following the cancellation of last year’s public examinations we developed a bespoke timetable for Year 11 and Year 13. With the news that the Summer 2021 exams will no longer take place, we will implement a similar programme for our exam year groups. More to follow on this in due course.

External visitors

Alton@Home has been adopted across every part of the school. Our aim is to implement virtual options in every area we possibly can. We really do want to keep the school running as normal as it possibly can at this time. Our School building may be closed to external visitors, but this is one example of where we have implemented virtual options. Which is why we are able to share details about our forthcoming Virtual Open Eventssee a full list here. All open days will continue to give you a flavour of the unique educational experience that we are proud to offer at Alton School.
