Alton School

Music

Music permeates school life at Alton.

We look at world music from Africa, Indonesia, India and the Caribbean as well as popular music, jazz, musical theatre and film music.

We offer individual tuition covering the complete range of orchestral instruments as well as piano, percussion, guitar (electric and acoustic), recorder, voice and theory.

We have an orchestra in both our Prep and Senior schools, as well as junior and senior chamber choirs and instrumental ensembles.

Pupils participate in local and national music festivals and competitions such as the Farnham and Godalming Festivals, the Hart Male Voice Choir Young Singer’s competition and the National Rotary Musician of the Year Award.

Music scholarships are awarded by audition and interview in our Senior and Sixth Form schools. A dedicated violin scholarship with a 50% reduction in fees is also available for entry into year 7.

In Senior School, Music is a compulsory subject in Years 7 to 9 where all elements of music such as melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, structure and timbre are experienced through composing, performing and listening tasks.  In Year 9 pupils study popular music, jazz, musical theatre and film music in preparation for those wishing to do GCSE Music.  This is offered in Years 10 and 11 (Eduqas specification).

Talented pupils in Years 11 to 13 are given opportunities to rehearse and direct ensembles or to accompany the choirs as part of their musical development.
