Academic Life

We value every child in our care. Whatever their ability, we give children the learning environment, the opportunities and the encouragement they need to develop their personal potential.

The Lower School is structured into three sections:

  • Reception to Year 2 (ages 4/5 to 6/7): EYFS and KS1
  • Lower KS2- Years 3 and 4 (ages 7/8 and 8/9)
  • Upper KS2-Years 5 and 6(ages 9/10, 10/11))

The emphasis on active, hands-on learning experiences continues throughout the Lower School at Alton, fostering curiosity and creativity in students. Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum but goes beyond the confines of it, allowing us to provide a rich ‘all-round’ education. Our nurturing environment encourages pupils to reach high expectations of academic achievement while untapping their potential through exploration and inquiry. The Lower School provides rich learning experiences where pupils receive an excellent education and preparation for entry to the Senior School.

In addition to delivering a first-rate academic education with excellent teaching in numeracy and literacy, the Lower School offers ample opportunities in Sport, Art, Information Technology, Music and Drama. These are complemented by a full programme of extra-curricular activities, both before and after school.

Specialist teaching begins in Reception, covering Spanish, PE, Music, swimming and Art. As pupils progress, they gain more access to Senior School facilities, including the Drama Studio, Music Rooms, Science labs, and the cookery suite. Additionally, our dedicated teachers are strong advocates of Outdoor Learning, utilising our beautiful site whenever possible.

Assessment is an integral part of our teaching process. Pupils complete end of topic assessments in Maths and in Literacy pupils work is assessed termly using Big Writes. Pupils in Years 3 and 5 complete a CAT4 standardised test each year and all pupils complete PTM and PTE standardised assessments in the summer term. This data helps us track each child’s progress and inform our teaching strategies to ensure their success.

Our school is organised into a House system that spans all year groups. House events encourage pupils to make the most of the opportunities within this ‘family.’ These events include House Singing, Book Challenges, Conker Wars, Recycling Art Projects, Christmas Card designs, DIY Christmas Jumper Competitions, Competitive Sports, Debates, House Quizzes, and more.

Regular celebrations and school assemblies throughout the term provide further opportunities for pupils to come together and showcase their achievements.
