New Headmaster at Alton School
The Board of Governors is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Karl Guest as Headmaster of Alton School with effect from 27 April 2020.
Karl has a wealth of teaching and leadership experience gained at four highly successful independent schools. He is currently the Deputy Head of Sydenham High School, London, a school of 640 pupils where he is responsible for all aspects of pastoral life. He was also Acting Head for six months. He has previously served as Assistant Head at Sutton High School in Cheam, Head of Boarding at Hampshire Collegiate School, and Head of Theology at Worth School in West Sussex.
Karl comes with overseas experience too from St Hilda’s School in Perth, where he was Head of House and Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies. He has also worked as a visiting lecturer in Philosophy at St Mary’s College, Twickenham where he is an alumnus, graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Theology and a Distinction in his MA.
A practising Catholic and ardent football supporter, Karl is a keen cook and musician. He plays the guitar, drums and piano and will be a useful addition to Alton’s musical scene. Currently in training for his first marathon, Karl also enjoys cycling, walking and running. He is married to Kate and they have two children, Brendan who is in his final year of a Physiotherapy degree at King’s London and Madeline who is in Year 12 studying for her A Levels.
Clive Hexton, Chair of Governors, said: “The post attracted a tremendous field of candidates, both deputies and serving heads, and we are very pleased indeed to have been able to appoint someone of Karl’s calibre. I would like to thank my fellow Governors, members of staff and pupils for their support and involvement in ensuring we have appointed the right candidate to be our next Head.
“I am confident that he combines all the required characteristics, intellectual ability and practical skills to lead the School. His values resonate strongly with those of Alton and there is no doubt in my mind that he has the experience and personal qualities to meet the heavy demands of headship and take the School forward in its next stage of development. We very much look forward to welcoming him in April and I wish him every success.”
Mr Guest said he is excited and honoured to have been appointed the next Head of Alton School.
“Throughout the selection process, I have been struck by the warmth of the School, its focus on developing the whole child, its outstanding pastoral care and the commitment of its staff and members of the School community.
“It is a privilege to be invited to lead the School in the next phase of its development. I look forward to building on the exceptional leadership of Graham Maher and getting to know the staff, parents, friends and alumni – and above all, its pupils.”
Headmaster Graham Maher said: “After eighteen years at Alton School it is very hard to say goodbye. However, I am delighted that such an experienced and able successor has been appointed and I look forward to preparing a thorough handover with Karl to give him the best possible start in April 2020.”
Graham leaves us with our thanks for his dedicated service to the School. He has played an important role in so many of our lives and will be much missed. We wish him every success in the next stage of his career.
