7 a-side Festival Hits the Spot
Wednesday 1st November saw the introduction of Alton School’s Local Mixed 7-a-side Football Festival for students in Year 5 & 6. With 15 teams entered from the local area, the afternoon promised to be full of fun, football and games and it didn’t disappoint. The afternoon was run in conjunction with Chelsea FC, with all schools taking part in training sessions with their coaches.
Schools were organised into 3 groups with the top team from each group and the best runner up across all three groups progressing through to the knock out stages. All teams entered put on a great display of footballing skills and team work, but it was the schools from Farnham that stood out and finished top of their groups. The semi-finals comprised of St Poly Carp’s, Potters Gate School, St Peters and William Cobbett and it was the latter two who progressed to the final. The final was an end to end affair but neither school could break the deadlock due to some great goalkeeping from both teams. The matched finished 0-0 which meant the final had to be decided by a penalty shootout. After the scores were level after three penalties, the shootout went to sudden death. William Cobbett went first and held their nerve to score, meaning Potters Gate had to score. The subsequent penalty was struck to the bottom left but William Cobbett’s commanding goalkeeper managed to get a foot on the ball sending it wide of the goal and ensuring William Cobbett were crowned the winners of Alton School Football Festival 2017.
