Mrs Hoyes’ last lesson

Little did Mrs Hoyes think, when she arrived at school yesterday morning, that her last lesson as an English teacher would become a party! She might have imagined that her students would be too preoccupied with their studies to remember this milestone but no; Tess of the D’Urbervilles and The Great Gatsby were eschewed in favour of cake, candles and sparkling cordial! Mrs Hoyes has spent the last 44 years of her career teaching in Alton schools: we wonder how many Alton pupils have been taught the enduring classics of world literature by her? You will be greatly missed, Mrs Hoyes – Happy Grandparenthood and Happy Travels to you and Mr Hoyes!
